Female Factory Laborer

Female laborers had many roles in society. Besides working in factories they also had the burdens of regular chores. They had to take care of household chores and taking care of the children. The positive things of this was that they helped provide for the family. This helped the way the women could work along with others, but working in the factories caused many health problems. I believe that it was bad but at the same time it helped provide for the family.

Not only did women have to care for the house as well as work, but by working, they spent less time with their children. They needed other people to watch their children for them. Some mothers would drug their children with opium to calm them.

I think along with women, men had to suffer through poor working conditions and overcrowded cities. But I think unionization was a bad thing.People contracted diseases bacause of the jobs they had to take to support their families.

well, i women worked more outside of the home then i think they did at home, thats what made life so hard and why the children were always out in the factories. and yes, it did cause many health problems for women and that on top of household chores (if they had a house) made life nearly impossible to live by

Your comments about working women during the period of industrialization is strikingly similar to the way working women are viewed today. Especially in the South, people think that women should control their homes first, makings sure things run slowly with meals and children and housework. Having a job is seen as an unimportant and very secondary position. During industrialization, people felt similarly, but they had reason. Today women are as close as they've ever been to equality with men, but they remain plighted with the struggle to balance between the working world and the domestic world and deciding their place between the two.
